A Haiphong adventure built around trekking and exploring takes you far beyond the city’s cafes and colonial streets. Within a couple of hours you can hike forest trails in Cat Ba National Park, climb a low limestone hill in the countryside, walk to remote villages and peek into caves that once sheltered soldiers. Most routes are short to moderate, so you do not need to be an expert hiker, just reasonably fit and well prepared.
This guide from the Haiphong Adventure team shares the trekking and exploring experiences we recommend most often to guests, how difficult they are, what to pack and how to stay safe. Trail conditions, park rules and fees change with the seasons, so always check locally before setting off (updated October 2026).

Why Haiphong Is Great For Trekking And Exploring
Haiphong is best known as a port city, but its territory also includes Cat Ba Island, karst hills, mangroves and quiet farming villages. That mix makes it an easy base for active travellers.
- Variety. Jungle, limestone peaks, rice fields and coastline in one region.
- Short distances. Most trailheads are a few hours or less from the city.
- Fewer crowds. Many routes see far fewer visitors than Sapa or Ha Long.
- Local culture. Treks often pass through villages where daily life continues as it has for generations.
If you are combining hiking with other activities, our guide to Cat Ba trekking, hiking and swimming activities shows how to balance a full day.

Trekking In Cat Ba National Park
Cat Ba National Park covers much of the interior of Cat Ba Island. Its limestone hills are covered in tropical forest, and it is home to a rich variety of plants, birds and other wildlife.
Ngu Lam Peak
This is the classic short hike. The path climbs steadily through forest, with some rocky steps near the top, to a viewpoint overlooking a sea of green karst hills. Start early to avoid the midday heat.
Jungle trail to Viet Hai village
A longer trek leads through the forest to Viet Hai, a small village surrounded by cliffs. The trail can be muddy after rain, so good shoes matter. Many trekkers return by bike or boat, depending on arrangements.

For a detailed look at the route to the summit, see our guide to the Ngu Lam Peak trail in Cat Ba National Park.

Exploring The Countryside Around The City
You do not have to go to Cat Ba for a taste of the outdoors. The countryside around Haiphong offers gentle hikes and rural exploring.
Elephant Mountain (Nui Voi)
This long, low limestone hill in the An Lao area is said to resemble an elephant. Short paths lead to viewpoints and small caves, and local legends add colour to the walk. It is a good half-day trip for families or less experienced hikers.
Village and rice field walks
Walking between villages lets you see farmers at work, temples at the edge of the fields and water buffalo grazing. These walks are easy, but bring sun protection, as there is little shade.

Our guide to exploring rural villages on a Haiphong motorbike tour shows how to combine short walks with a countryside ride.

Meeting People Along The Way
One of the best parts of trekking in the region is the chance to meet local people. In Viet Hai and other villages, you may see farmers tending vegetables, children cycling to school or elders resting in the shade.
- Greet with a smile. A simple “xin chao” (hello) is always appreciated.
- Ask before photos. Gesture to your camera and wait for a nod.
- Support local businesses. Buy drinks or snacks from village shops.
- Respect private land. Stay on paths and do not enter gardens or homes uninvited.

What To Pack For Trekking
Most hikes are short, but heat, humidity and mud can make them harder than expected. Pack light but smart.
- Grippy shoes. Trail shoes or sturdy trainers with good tread.
- Water. At least 1 to 1.5 litres per person for a short hike, more for longer treks.
- Sun protection. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Insect repellent. Especially in the forest and near water.
- Light rain jacket. Weather can change quickly.
- Small first aid kit. Plasters, antiseptic and any personal medication.
- Snacks. Fruit, nuts or energy bars.
- Cash. For park fees, drinks and village shops.

Safety Tips For Your Haiphong Adventure
- Start early. Mornings are cooler and you have more daylight if things take longer.
- Check the weather. Avoid steep trails after heavy rain, when rocks become slippery.
- Tell someone your plan. Let your hotel know where you are going.
- Stay on marked paths. Limestone terrain can be sharp and uneven.
- Hike with a guide on longer routes. Some trails are not well signed.
- Know your limits. Turn back if you feel unwell or the path becomes unsafe.

- Autumn (roughly September to November). Often comfortable temperatures and clearer skies. A popular time for hiking.
- Spring (roughly March to April). Mild and green, though misty days are common.
- Summer (roughly May to August). Hot and humid with heavy showers. Start very early.
- Winter (roughly December to February). Cooler and sometimes drizzly. Pack a warm layer.
Weather varies year to year, so check the forecast a few days ahead. Many travellers join one of our haiphong tours to handle transport and trail choice, which leaves more energy for the trek itself.
