Cheap Hotels in Haiphong City Center Worth Booking

Finding cheap hotels in Haiphong city center is easier than in many Asian cities. Haiphong sees fewer international tourists than Hanoi, so budget rooms are plentiful, prices stay reasonable and many small hotels are run by friendly local families. A clean double room with air conditioning, hot water and wifi near the Opera House or Tam Bac Lake often costs much less than a similar room in Hanoi.

This guide from the Haiphong Adventure team explains where to look, what you get for your money, how to spot good value, which red flags to avoid and how to book at the best price. We do not list named hotels with fixed rates because prices change with the season and booking platform. Use the ranges as a reference, updated November 2026.

What Counts as Cheap in Haiphong

In Haiphong, budget accommodation falls into a few clear groups. Rough nightly prices for a double room are below. Weekends, public holidays and Tet push prices up, while weekdays in the low season can be cheaper.

Type Rough price per night What you usually get
Guesthouse or nha nghi About 250,000 to 400,000 VND Basic private room, fan or air conditioning, private bathroom, little English
Budget mini hotel About 350,000 to 600,000 VND Air conditioning, hot shower, wifi, elevator in newer buildings, reception desk
Value 2 to 3 star hotel About 600,000 to 1,000,000 VND Larger rooms, breakfast often included, better soundproofing, English speaking staff
Homestay room Varies widely Local character, family atmosphere, shared spaces

For most travelers, the sweet spot is a budget mini hotel or a value 2 to 3 star hotel. You get comfort and a central location for a small price.

Best Central Areas for Cheap Hotels

Around the Opera House

This is the heart of the city. You can walk to the flower garden boulevard, the colonial post office, cafes and evening street food. Rooms here cost a little more, but you save on transport and time. Side streets one or two blocks away from the square are often quieter and cheaper.

Near Tam Bac Lake

The lake area mixes local life with easy access to markets and the old streets. You will find many small family hotels here at friendly prices. Evenings by the lake are lively and pleasant for a walk after dinner.

Around the railway station

Handy if you arrive or leave by train. This area has plenty of simple guesthouses and local eateries. It is still within walking or short riding distance of the main sights.

Lach Tray and Van Cao area

Slightly outside the historic core, this area has newer mini hotels and serviced rooms, often at good prices, with quick rides to the center and to Cat Bi Airport. It suits travelers who prefer modern rooms over old town character.

What a Budget Room Usually Includes

  • Air conditioning: standard in most mini hotels, essential from May to September.
  • Private bathroom: usually with a hot shower. Some older buildings have a wet room style bathroom.
  • Wifi: almost always free, speeds vary by building.
  • Basics: towels, soap, bottled water and a kettle are common.
  • Breakfast: more common at value 2 to 3 star hotels. In budget places, eating breakfast at a nearby stall is cheaper and tastier anyway.
  • Elevator: not guaranteed. Tall, narrow buildings may have only stairs, so ask if you have heavy luggage.

How to Spot a Good Value Hotel

Price alone does not tell you everything. Use this checklist when comparing cheap hotels in Haiphong city center:

  1. Recent reviews: read reviews from the last few months, not just the overall score.
  2. Real photos: look for guest photos of the bathroom and bed, not only professional pictures.
  3. Windows: many budget rooms have no window or face an inside wall. Check the room type if natural light matters to you.
  4. Noise: rooms facing main roads can be loud early in the morning. Higher floors and back rooms are quieter.
  5. Location on the map: check walking time to the Opera House or Tam Bac Lake rather than trusting the word center in the name.
  6. Cancellation terms: free cancellation gives flexibility if your plans change.

Red Flags to Avoid

  • Listings with very few reviews and photos that look too polished for the price.
  • Repeated reviews mentioning damp smells, mold or broken air conditioning.
  • Hotels that ask you to pay a large deposit by bank transfer before arrival.
  • Properties far outside the center that advertise themselves as central.
  • Rooms advertised by the hour, which usually indicates a short stay motel rather than a tourist hotel.

If a place does not feel right when you arrive, it is fine to leave and find another. In the center there are always other options within a few minutes.

Booking Tips to Get the Best Price

Compare platforms and direct rates

Check two or three booking platforms, then look at the hotel website or message them. Small hotels sometimes offer a slightly lower rate for direct bookings, especially for longer stays.

Book early for weekends and holidays

Domestic tourists fill central hotels on weekends, during summer and around national holidays. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday nights, and much earlier for Tet.

Ask for a weekly rate

If you stay five nights or more, ask for a discount. Many family hotels are happy to offer one, particularly in the low season.

Bring your passport

Hotels in Vietnam must register foreign guests, so reception will ask to see your passport at check in. This is normal. Ask for it back when the registration is done.

Save More Around Your Hotel

  • Eat local: a bowl of banh da cua or a banh mi cay from a nearby stall costs very little and is often the best meal of the day.
  • Walk: from a central hotel, most sights are a short walk away.
  • Use ride apps: for longer trips, they are cheaper than hotel arranged cars.
  • Laundry: local laundry shops charge by the kilo and are cheaper than hotel service.
  • Water: buy large bottles at a convenience store instead of the minibar.
