Reasons to Stay in Haiphong City

Food that locals travel for

Haiphong is a food city first. Banh da cua crab noodle soup, banh mi cay, nem cua be crab spring rolls and fresh seafood are cheap and everywhere. You can eat at a new stall for every meal and still not try everything.

Real local life

Few international tourists stay long in Haiphong, so daily life feels authentic. Morning exercise by the lake, coffee on tiny stools and noisy markets are part of every walk.

Easy arrivals and departures

Cat Bi Airport, the railway station from Hanoi and frequent buses make Haiphong a simple place to arrive late or leave early. If your flight is at dawn, sleeping in the city is far less stressful than leaving Cat Ba before sunrise.

More choice and better value

The city has a wider range of hotels, guesthouses and serviced apartments, and rooms often cost less than in Cat Ba during peak season.

Reasons to Stay on Cat Ba Island

Lan Ha Bay on your doorstep

Lan Ha Bay is part of the Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage area. From Cat Ba town, boats leave every morning for limestone islands, floating fishing villages, quiet lagoons and small beaches. Staying on the island means you can join early trips and come back for sunset without a long transfer.

Hiking and wildlife

Cat Ba National Park covers much of the island, with forest trails, caves and viewpoints. Hikers can tackle short walks or longer treks, and the park is home to the rare Cat Ba langur.

Beach time and slow days

The Cat Co beaches near town, island beaches in the bay and scenic roads across the island make Cat Ba ideal for slow days. Many visitors rent a scooter or join a tour to explore quieter corners.

Sleep on the water

Some overnight cruises in Lan Ha Bay start from Cat Ba, giving you a night among the islands before returning to land.

Getting Between Haiphong and Cat Ba

The journey is part of the decision. Cat Ba is close on the map but you always need a crossing by water.

Seasons Change the Answer

Summer, May to August

Cat Ba is at its liveliest, with warm water and long beach days. It is also busiest, especially on weekends and Vietnamese holidays, so book rooms and boats early. Storms can cancel boat trips, so leave a spare day.

Autumn, September to November

Often the sweet spot. The sea is still warm, crowds are thinner and the light over the bay is beautiful. Both places work well.

Winter, December to February

Cat Ba can be cool, grey and quiet, and some restaurants and boats reduce their schedules. Haiphong city is more comfortable as a base, with day trips to the bay on clear days.

Spring, March and April

Misty mornings and mild days. Good for hiking on Cat Ba and walking in the city. Bay views can be hazy, which some photographers love.
