Haiphong To Cat Ba Travel Time And Schedule Info

Most travellers ask us the same two things about the trip from Haiphong to Cat Ba: how long will it really take, and what time does the last boat or bus leave? The honest answer is that the ride itself is short, usually somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 hours from the city to Cat Ba town, but the total travel time depends far more on waiting, connections and the season than on the distance. A smooth morning can get you onto the island before lunch. A missed ferry in the low season can cost you half an afternoon.

This guide is about time and schedules only. We break down realistic door-to-door durations for each option, explain how departures tend to work across the year, and show you how much buffer to leave when your Haiphong to Cat Ba crossing has to connect with a flight, a train or a booked cruise. If you want the bigger picture on routes, costs and what to do on the island, our guide to planning a perfect Cat Ba tour from Haiphong City covers that in detail.

Haiphong To Cat Ba Travel Time At A Glance

Before we go option by option, here is the rough picture our guides give guests at the hotel lobby. These are typical ranges in normal conditions, measured from central Haiphong (around the Opera House area) to Cat Ba town, and they include the usual short waits but not bad luck.

  • Express bus plus Got ferry: around 2 to 2.5 hours door to door, sometimes 3 if you just miss a ferry.
  • Speedboat from Binh pier: often under an hour on the water, but add the trip to the pier, check-in time and the transfer from the arrival pier to town. Plan around 1.5 to 2 hours total.
  • Private car with driver: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, plus any ferry wait.
  • Motorbike: about 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on your pace, photo stops and the ferry.

The common thread is the water crossing. Every land route still uses a ferry at the Got pier (Cai Vieng side) to reach Cat Ba Island, and the speedboat is itself a water crossing. That is where most of the uncertainty sits, so that is where we will focus.

How Haiphong To Cat Ba Schedules Actually Work

People coming from countries with fixed, published timetables are often surprised by how flexible things are here. There are schedules, but they move with the season, the weather and the number of passengers, and the information you find online is frequently out of date. We would rather explain the pattern than give you a timetable that may already have changed.

Seasonal rhythm

Summer, roughly May to August, is peak season for Vietnamese families heading to the beach. Ferries at Got run more often, extra buses are added, and speedboats from Binh pier tend to operate more regularly. From late autumn through winter, demand drops, some speedboat services become less frequent or pause altogether, and ferries may run at wider intervals. Public holidays such as Tet and the 30 April to 1 May break are a different story: frequent departures, but long queues for cars and full buses.

First and last departures

As a general rule, transport on this route runs from early morning until late afternoon or early evening. In practice that means the first ferries and buses usually start somewhere in the early morning, and the last reliable connections are often in the late afternoon. Exact times shift between seasons and operators, so treat anything after mid-afternoon as risky unless you have confirmed it locally that day. Speedboats in particular tend to have only a few runs, often clustered in the morning and early afternoon.

Weather and sea conditions

Strong winds, storms or thick fog can delay or cancel boats, especially the speedboat. During the typhoon months (roughly July to October) authorities sometimes suspend sea traffic altogether for a day or two. Ferries at Got are short crossings and keep running in most conditions, but they too can stop in a serious storm warning.

Door-To-Door Time: What The Numbers Leave Out

The travel times you see quoted are usually vehicle times. What actually eats your day are the small pieces around them. When we plan a transfer for guests, we add these up separately.

  • Getting out of the city: 15 to 30 minutes from the centre to the bridge or pier, longer during the morning and evening rush hours.
  • Waiting at the ferry: anything from a few minutes to around an hour, depending on timing and the season.
  • The crossing itself: the Got ferry ride is short, but loading and unloading vehicles adds time.
  • The island road to Cat Ba town: the drive from the ferry landing to town is around 30 minutes, longer if you are heading to the far side of the island.
  • Getting to your hotel: buses usually drop off in town, and some offer a hotel drop; if not, add a short taxi or walk.

Put together, this is why we always tell people to think of the trip as a half-day job, even when the ride itself is under two hours. Plan it that way and anything faster is a bonus.

Many guests use the spare morning before an afternoon crossing to see the city first. A half-day loop with one of our guides fits easily into that gap if you leave your bags at the hotel and book the onward transport for after lunch.

Express Bus And Got Ferry: The Steady Option

The combined bus and ferry ticket is the option most independent travellers use. A bus or minivan picks up in Haiphong (some services collect from hotels, others leave from a fixed point in the city), crosses the Tan Vu–Lach Huyen bridge to Cat Hai, rides onto the ferry at Got, and continues across Cat Ba Island to town.

Typical time: around 2 to 2.5 hours. The good thing about this route is that the bus usually waits for the ferry with you, so you do not have to coordinate two separate tickets. The downside is that you depend on the bus schedule, which is often roughly hourly in busy periods and thinner in the low season. If you miss one, the next can be a while.

Our advice: book the day before through your hotel or ask us to check, and do not rely on the last bus of the day. If there are only a couple of departures left in the afternoon, take the earlier one. For more on tickets and pick-up points, see our ferry and bus tips for the Cat Ba journey.

Speedboat From Binh Pier: Fast But Seasonal

When it runs, the speedboat from Binh pier near the city centre is the quickest way to Cat Ba. The time on the water is often under an hour, and you land on the island with a short onward transfer to town.

Typical time: around 1.5 to 2 hours door to door once you add the trip to the pier, the recommended early arrival and the transfer at the other end. The catch is frequency. Speedboats usually operate only a handful of times a day, are the first service to be cancelled in rough weather, and may run reduced or no services in the cooler months. If your plans depend on a specific speedboat departure, confirm it the day before and again in the morning.

The speedboat is also the least predictable for luggage and seating, so if you have a tight connection, we usually suggest the bus and ferry combination instead.

Private Car Transfer: The Most Controllable

A private car with a driver is the option that gives you the most control over time. You leave when you want, the driver knows the ferry rhythm, and you can be dropped directly at your hotel or at the pier for a booked cruise.

Typical time: around 1.5 to 2 hours. The only real variable is the ferry queue. In summer weekends and holidays, cars can wait noticeably longer than foot passengers and motorbikes because vehicle space on each ferry is limited. Leaving early in the morning usually avoids most of this.

For families, small groups or anyone connecting to a flight, this is the option we recommend most often. It costs more than the bus, but it removes the risk of missing a fixed departure.

Motorbike: Flexible, With A Ferry Twist

Riding from Haiphong to Cat Ba is a real pleasure on a clear day, with sea views from the bridge and coastal scenery on the island. It is also the most flexible: motorbikes board the ferry easily and rarely wait as long as cars.

Typical time: about 1.5 hours for a steady ride, 2.5 hours or more with stops. The things that slow riders down are city traffic on the way out, strong crosswinds on the bridge, and rain. If you are not used to Vietnamese traffic, read our local traffic tips for riders first, or ride with one of our guides. We also offer motorbike rental, so message us if you want to ride yourself.

Cable Car And Bridge Connections: Check Before Relying

A cable car linking Cat Hai and Phu Long on Cat Ba Island has been part of the route in recent years, but its operating status and hours have changed more than once. Some days it runs, some periods it is closed for maintenance or reduced to certain hours. We do not build any timed itinerary around it unless we have confirmed it is running that week.

The Tan Vu–Lach Huyen bridge itself is open all day, so the road part of the journey is not time-limited. It is always the sea crossing at the end that sets your schedule.

Planning Buffers For Flights, Trains And Cruises

This is where most travel stress comes from. Cat Ba is close to Haiphong, but it is still an island, and the last part of any trip back is a water crossing that can be delayed. Here are the buffers we give our own guests.

Leave a buffer before flights, trains and cruises

Connecting to a flight at Cat Bi airport

Cat Bi International Airport is on the edge of Haiphong, which makes it a convenient gateway. Coming back from Cat Ba, we suggest leaving the island at least 5 to 6 hours before a domestic flight, and earlier for an international one. That covers the island road, a possible ferry wait, the drive back across the bridge, check-in and a margin for weather. Arriving on a morning flight, you can usually reach Cat Ba by mid-afternoon if you go straight from the airport by car.

Connecting to the train at Haiphong Railway Station

The train between Hanoi and Haiphong takes around 2.5 hours, with only a few departures a day, so a missed train can mean a long wait. Plan to reach Haiphong Railway Station at least an hour before departure, which means leaving Cat Ba around 4 hours before the train. Coming from Hanoi, a morning train lets you continue to Cat Ba the same afternoon, but the timing can be tight in the low season, so check the onward connection the day before.

Connecting to a Lan Ha Bay cruise

Day cruises usually leave in the morning. If you are coming from Haiphong on the same day, take the earliest transport you can and tell the cruise operator your arrival plan. In practice, most guests find it far easier to sleep on Cat Ba the night before.

Sample Timelines For Your Crossing

To make the numbers real, here are two timelines we often use. They are examples, not schedules, and every time listed is approximate.

Relaxed morning crossing

  • Around 7:30 to 8:00: breakfast and check out in Haiphong.
  • Around 8:30: pick-up by bus or private car.
  • Around 9:15 to 9:45: cross the bridge and reach the Got ferry.
  • Around 10:00 to 10:30: on the island, driving to Cat Ba town.
  • Around 10:30 to 11:00: arrive, drop bags, early lunch, afternoon free for a hike or beach.

City morning, afternoon crossing

  • Morning: a guided city loop or food stop in Haiphong while bags stay at the hotel.
  • Around midday: lunch, collect bags.
  • Early afternoon: depart for Cat Ba, aiming for a departure well before the last connections.
  • Mid to late afternoon: arrive in Cat Ba town, check in, sunset at Cannon Fort if you still have energy.

Practical Tips For Checking Times On The Day

Because schedules move, the most useful skill is knowing how to check them. These are the habits we recommend.

Ask your hotel to confirm departure times on the day
Ask your hotel to confirm departure times on the day
  • Ask the day before, then again in the morning. Hotel reception staff in Haiphong and Cat Ba usually know the current bus and boat times, and they can call operators directly.
  • Watch the weather, not just the calendar. A sunny morning can turn windy by afternoon in the shoulder months. If a storm is forecast, travel earlier rather than later.
  • Avoid the last departure. If the last bus or boat is cancelled or full, you may be stuck for the night. Take the one before.
  • Allow extra time on holidays and summer weekends. Ferry queues for cars can grow quickly from late morning.
  • Keep a backup. If public transport falls through, a private car is usually still possible, though prices rise at short notice.
  • Save offline maps and your hotel address. Phone signal is generally fine, but it helps to have the address ready for the driver.

For guests who want certainty, we can arrange a private transfer timed around their flight, train or cruise. You can also browse our Haiphong tours if you want to combine the transfer day with a few hours in the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Haiphong to Cat Ba take in total?

For most people it is around 1.5 to 2.5 hours from central Haiphong to Cat Ba town. Speedboats can be faster on the water, but once you add transfers, the total time is similar. Plan for half a day to stay relaxed.

What time is the last bus or boat to the island?

It changes with the season. Departures usually run from early morning until late afternoon or early evening, but the last reliable options are often mid to late afternoon. Always confirm locally on the day, and avoid relying on the final run.

Do the schedules change between summer and winter?

Yes. Summer brings more frequent ferries, extra buses and more speedboat runs. In the cooler months, speedboats may be limited or suspended and some services run less often.

Can I still reach the island after an evening flight?

It is possible by private car if the ferry is still operating, but late-evening crossings are not something to count on. If your flight lands in the evening, we recommend a night in Haiphong and an early start the next morning.

How early should I leave Cat Ba to catch a train in Haiphong?

We suggest leaving Cat Ba around 4 hours before your train. That gives time for the island road, the ferry, the drive into the city and arriving at the station with a comfortable margin.

Is a same-day return trip realistic?

It is doable if you leave early and return in the afternoon, but you will spend a large part of the day travelling. Most guests enjoy the island much more with at least one night there.
