Lan Ha Bay Tour Experience Cruising The Unknown

The first time most people see Lan Ha Bay, it is from the deck of a slow wooden boat with a coffee in hand, and the reaction is almost always the same: a long silence, then “why have I never heard of this place?” Hundreds of limestone islands rise straight out of jade-green water south and east of Cat Ba Island, with tiny beaches tucked between them and fishing rafts bobbing in sheltered coves. A Lan Ha Bay tour gives you the karst scenery people travel to Ha Long for, usually with fewer boats around you and more time to actually be on the water.

This article is not a transport guide or a price list. It is a walk through what a real day on a Lan Ha Bay tour feels like, from the early pier to the last light on the water, written from what our guides and guests experience on these trips again and again. If you still need to sort out how to get to the island, our guide to planning a Cat Ba tour from Haiphong City covers routes and timing.

Why Lan Ha Bay Still Feels Undiscovered

Lan Ha Bay sits right next to Ha Long Bay. Geologically they are the same landscape, and in 2023 the Cat Ba archipelago, including Lan Ha, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage site that already covered Ha Long. Yet for years most international visitors went straight to Ha Long from Hanoi and never knew the southern side existed.

That history is why Lan Ha still feels a little like a secret. Boats have to come from Cat Ba Island, so the bay is busy in places on summer weekends, but it lacks the long lines of cruise ships you can see on the main Ha Long routes. Many of the smaller islands have no buildings at all. In some lagoons, the only sounds are birds, water against the rocks and the occasional engine of a fisherman’s boat.

The island setting also shapes the mood of the day. You are not on a tight city-to-bay-and-back schedule. You wake up on Cat Ba, walk or ride a few minutes to the pier, and the bay starts almost immediately.

Morning At The Pier: How A Lan Ha Bay Tour Begins

Most day trips leave in the morning from a pier near Cat Ba town. Pick-up is often from your hotel, sometimes by minibus, sometimes just a short walk with a guide holding a sign. The pier itself is a lively place at this hour: boat crews loading ice and drinking water, fishermen coming back from the night, groups gathering in life jackets.

Boats vary a lot. Some are traditional wooden junks with an open upper deck and loungers, others are newer, more modern vessels with an enclosed cabin. On smaller private tours, you may be on a compact boat with just your group. Whatever the boat, there is usually a quick safety briefing, a check that everyone has a life jacket, and then you pull away from the harbour and the town disappears behind the first island within minutes.

Our tip: sit on the open deck for the first half hour. The light is soft, the air is cooler, and the transition from busy harbour to quiet karst is the moment many of our guests remember most.

What A Typical Day Looks Like

Every operator plans its own route, and routes change with the tide, weather and local rules. Still, most full-day trips follow a similar rhythm: a slow cruise out, a stop at a floating fishing area, kayaking or a small boat ride into a lagoon, a beach or swimming stop, lunch on board, more cruising in the afternoon, and a return to Cat Ba in the mid to late afternoon. Overnight cruises add sunset, dinner on the water and a quiet morning in the bay.

Below we follow that rhythm step by step, so you know what to expect at each part of the day.

Gliding Past The Floating Fishing Villages

The first stop on many Lan Ha Bay tour routes is a floating fishing area. For generations, families in this part of the bay have lived and worked on wooden rafts, farming fish, clams and other seafood in nets beneath their platforms. In recent years many floating houses have been reorganised or moved as the bay has been managed for tourism and the environment, so what you see today depends on the route and the season.

Even so, you will usually pass rafts with dogs barking at the edge, laundry drying in the sun and small boats tied alongside. Some tours stop at a fish farm where you can see the cages and, sometimes, choose seafood for lunch. It is a working place, not a show, so be respectful: ask before taking close-up photos of people, and keep your voice down near living areas.

Paddling Into Quiet Lagoons

For many guests, this is the highlight. The boat anchors near a cluster of karsts, and you switch to a kayak or a small bamboo or rowing boat paddled by a local. You slip through a low gap in the rock, sometimes a short cave passage, and come out into an enclosed lagoon with cliffs on every side.

The water here is usually calm and very clear on good days. Look up and you may see birds nesting in the cliffs. The temperature drops a little in the shade of the rock, and the noise of the main bay disappears. Whether you can enter certain lagoons depends on the tide, since some passages close at high water, which is one reason routes are never exactly the same. Before you paddle, read our tips for kayaking safely on a Lan Ha Bay tour.

Stopping At A Small Sandy Beach

Lan Ha Bay is known for its small beaches, pockets of pale sand at the foot of the karsts, many of them reachable only by boat. A typical stop gives you time to swim, wade, take photos or just sit in the shade. On weekdays outside summer, you may share the beach with only one or two other boats.

Bring water shoes if you have them, as some beaches have rocks and shells near the waterline, and remember there are rarely facilities beyond what the boat provides. Keep your rubbish with you; the crew will take it back to the island.

Lunch On Deck Among The Karsts

Lunch is usually served on the boat while it is anchored in a calm spot. Expect a spread of Vietnamese dishes shared at the table: rice, stir-fried vegetables, fried tofu, spring rolls, and seafood such as fish, squid, shrimp or clams depending on what is fresh. Many boats can prepare vegetarian food if you mention it when booking. Drinks are often extra.

It is one of the most relaxed parts of the day. Conversations start between strangers, the kids jump back into the water, and the guides finally get to sit down. If you love food, a meal in the bay is a nice contrast to Haiphong’s street food, which we cover in our guide to a real Haiphong food tour.

Afternoon Cruising And Monkey Island Views

After lunch, the boat usually moves slowly through another part of the bay. Some routes pass near Monkey Island, where you can see the beach and, often, monkeys along the shore. If your tour lands there, do not feed them or carry food in your hands, and keep sunglasses and phones secure, as the monkeys are bold and quick.

The afternoon is also when many boats offer a second swim stop. The water from late spring to early autumn is warm enough for most people to stay in for a long time. In winter, it is cool and many guests prefer to stay on deck.

Golden Light On The Way Back

Day trips usually return in the mid to late afternoon, which means the ride back often happens in the softest, warmest light of the day. The karsts turn gold on one side and dark blue on the other, and the water calms down. On overnight cruises, or on trips that return later, you may catch the actual sunset on the water, followed by the lights of fishing boats coming on one by one.

Our guides like to tell guests to put the camera down for at least ten minutes on the way home. This is the part of the day when the bay feels most peaceful.

Lan Ha Bay Vs Ha Long Bay: A Quick Comparison

We get asked this all the time, and the honest answer is that both are beautiful. They are part of the same landscape and share the same UNESCO protection. The differences are more about the experience.

  • Crowds: Ha Long Bay is busier, especially on the main routes. Lan Ha generally feels quieter, though popular stops can get busy in summer.
  • Access: Ha Long cruises usually start from Ha Long city, easy from Hanoi. Lan Ha trips start on Cat Ba Island, so you need to get there first, usually through Haiphong.
  • Scenery: Ha Long has famous formations and large caves. Lan Ha is known for beaches, lagoons and a more intimate feel.
  • Activities: both offer kayaking and swimming, but Lan Ha’s smaller beaches and lagoons make water time a bigger part of the day.

If your time is short and you are based in Haiphong, a day cruise in Ha Long is easier to fit in. If you have two or three days, a stay on Cat Ba with a Lan Ha boat day is hard to beat. Our Ha Long Bay tours page shows what we currently offer on the Ha Long side.

Choosing The Right Lan Ha Bay Tour For You

The day you have depends a lot on the boat you choose. A few questions worth asking before you book:

Choosing the right bay tour for your travel style

  • Group size: large shared boats are cheaper but slower at each stop. Small group or private boats are more flexible.
  • Kayaking: is it included, and how long do you get in the water?
  • Route: which areas does the boat visit, and does it avoid the busiest stops at peak times? Our guide to a Lan Ha Bay route that avoids the crowded spots shows what to look for.
  • Food: what is included for lunch, and can they cater for dietary needs?
  • Safety: are life jackets in good condition, and are there child sizes?
  • Day or overnight: one night on the water lets you see sunset and early morning, which day trips usually miss.

Practical Tips For Your Day On The Water

  • Bring sunscreen, a hat and a long-sleeve top. There is very little shade on the open deck or in a kayak.
  • Pack a small dry bag for your phone and wallet, especially for kayaking.
  • Wear swimwear under your clothes so you are ready at swim stops.
  • Take motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive. The bay is usually calm, but wind can make it choppy.
  • Have some cash for drinks and tips.
  • Check the weather the evening before. In storm season, trips can be cancelled at short notice for safety.
  • From May to September, start early to avoid the hottest hours.

A Simple Two-Day Plan Around Your Bay Day

A bay day works best when it is not squeezed between two long transfers. This is the loose plan we suggest to guests coming from Haiphong who want to enjoy Lan Ha without rushing.

Essentials for a day on the water

Day one: cross to the island and settle in

Spend the morning in Haiphong, then travel to Cat Ba around midday. Our Haiphong to Cat Ba ferry and bus tips explain how the crossing works. Check in, walk along the seafront, and head up to Cannon Fort for the late-afternoon view over the harbour and the first islands of the bay. Go to bed early; boats leave in the morning.

Day two: the Lan Ha Bay tour

Breakfast, pick-up and a full day on the water as described above. Back on the island by late afternoon, you will have time for a shower, a seafood dinner in town and an easy evening. If you have a third day, use it for Cat Ba National Park or the beaches before returning to Haiphong. For ideas on the city part of the trip, see our favourite things to do in Haiphong on a weekend.
