Distance And Time Haiphong To Ninh Binh Guide

Planning to travel from Haiphong to Ninh Binh? The short answer: the two cities are roughly 120 to 160 kilometres apart by road, depending on the route, and the journey usually takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car or limousine van. That makes Ninh Binh, with its limestone mountains, river caves and rice fields, a realistic long day trip from Haiphong, and an even better stop on a two or three day loop through northern Vietnam.

In this guide, the Haiphong Adventure team explains the distance and travel time for each transport option, the main routes, what affects your timing, sample schedules for a day trip and practical tips for a comfortable ride. Road works, traffic and schedules change regularly, so treat the times below as realistic estimates (updated October 2026) and confirm details with your driver or transport company before you travel.

Haiphong To Ninh Binh Distance At A Glance

Haiphong sits on the coast east of Hanoi, while Ninh Binh lies south of Hanoi, at the southern edge of the Red River Delta. There is no single straight road between them, so the distance depends on which way you go. Here is a simple overview to help you plan.

Transport Typical door-to-door time Good for
Private car with driver About 2.5 to 3.5 hours Families, small groups, day trips
Limousine van (shared) About 3 to 4 hours with pick-ups Couples and solo travellers on a budget
Public bus About 3.5 to 4.5 hours Budget travellers with flexible time
Train via Hanoi Most of a day, with a change Rail fans, not for day trips
Motorbike tour About 4 to 5 hours with stops Experienced riders and adventure lovers

These times assume normal traffic. Rush hours, holidays, weather and road works can add an hour or more, especially on Friday afternoons and around Tet, the Lunar New Year.

The Main Routes From Haiphong To Ninh Binh

Drivers usually choose between two broad routes. Both are fine, and your driver will pick the best one on the day based on traffic.

Route 1, via the expressways

This route heads west on the Hanoi to Haiphong expressway towards the capital, then joins the expressway running south to Ninh Binh, bypassing central Hanoi. It is usually the longer route in kilometres, but expressway driving is smooth and predictable, so the time is often similar or shorter. It is a good choice if you want a steady, comfortable ride.

Route 2, through the delta provinces

The second option cuts south-west through the Red River Delta, passing through towns in the neighbouring provinces before reaching Ninh Binh. It is shorter in distance and more scenic, with rice fields, villages and river crossings, but it goes through more towns and junctions, so the speed varies more.

By Private Car With Driver

For most travellers, a private car is the easiest and most flexible way to go from Haiphong to Ninh Binh. The driver picks you up at your hotel, you leave when you want, stop for coffee or photos when you like and are dropped right at the boat pier or your homestay. For a group of three or four, the cost per person can be close to a shared service.

  • Time: about 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way in normal traffic.
  • Comfort: air conditioning, space for luggage and the option to rest.
  • Flexibility: ideal for day trips, as you can adjust the schedule on the day.
  • Tip: agree the price, route, waiting time and any tolls or parking before you go.

By Limousine Van Or Bus

Shared limousine vans, typically comfortable 9 to 11 seat minibuses, run between Haiphong and Ninh Binh and can be a good middle ground between price and comfort. Some offer hotel pick-up within the city centre, which adds time at the start, as the van collects other passengers.

Public buses are the cheapest option but the slowest. They stop often, may leave from bus stations outside the centre and are less comfortable for long legs and big bags. Operators, routes and timetables change regularly, so ask your hotel or a local agent to check the current options a day or two before you travel.

Tips for shared transport

  • Book a day ahead in busy seasons and at weekends.
  • Confirm the exact pick-up point and the drop-off point in Ninh Binh.
  • Keep valuables with you, not in the luggage hold.
  • Have your hotel address in Ninh Binh written in Vietnamese on your phone.

By Train Via Hanoi

There is no direct train between Haiphong and Ninh Binh. To go by rail you would take the train from Haiphong to Hanoi, then change to a north to south train that stops at Ninh Binh. The trains themselves are an interesting experience, but with the transfer and waiting time the whole journey can take most of a day.

Rail makes sense if you love trains or are already planning a night in Hanoi. For a day trip, it is not practical. If you want to try the line out of Haiphong, read about our experience taking the train between Hanoi and Haiphong.

By Motorbike

Riding from Haiphong to Ninh Binh is a real adventure through the heart of the Red River Delta. Quiet roads between rice fields, village markets, churches and river crossings make the journey part of the experience. With stops for coffee, lunch and photos, plan on four to five hours or more.

This is only for confident, experienced riders with the right licence and insurance. Expressways are not open to motorbikes, so riders use national and provincial roads, which can be busy with trucks near towns. If you are not used to Vietnamese traffic, a guided motorbike tour with a local rider is a much safer way to enjoy the countryside.

What Affects Your Travel Time

Even on a well-planned trip, a few factors can change how long the journey takes.

  • Time of departure: leaving Haiphong before the morning rush, around 7am, usually saves time.
  • Day of the week: Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are busier near the big cities.
  • Holidays: Tet and other public holidays bring heavy traffic and fully booked transport.
  • Weather: heavy rain slows traffic and can make rural roads muddy.
  • Road works: upgrades are common in fast-growing northern Vietnam.
  • Pick-ups: shared vans that collect several passengers add time at both ends.
