Connecting Tour Cat Ba To Ninh Binh Itinerary

Planning a connecting tour from Cat Ba to Ninh Binh is the easiest way to see the two most beautiful karst landscapes of northern Vietnam in one trip: limestone islands rising from the sea around Lan Ha Bay, and limestone peaks rising from rice fields around Tam Coc and Trang An. The short answer is that you need at least four days to enjoy both without rushing, with one full travel day in the middle. Five or six days is even better, especially if you want time for kayaking, hiking and a slow bike ride in the countryside.

In this guide, the Haiphong Adventure team shares a day by day Cat Ba to Ninh Binh itinerary that we often suggest to our guests, plus a shorter and a longer version, how to handle the transfer day, where to stay and what to pack. Travel times and services change, so treat all timings as realistic estimates (updated October 2026) and confirm details shortly before you go.

Why Connect Cat Ba And Ninh Binh In One Trip

Many travellers visit Ha Long Bay on a quick day trip from Hanoi and Ninh Binh on another, going back and forth to the capital each time. Linking Cat Ba and Ninh Binh directly saves that back and forth and gives you a much better rhythm.

  • Two different karst worlds: Cat Ba is about the sea, beaches, boats and kayaks. Ninh Binh is about rivers, rice paddies, temples and caves you row through.
  • Less time on the road: instead of two long round trips from Hanoi, you make one connecting journey across the Red River Delta.
  • Quieter alternatives: Lan Ha Bay is calmer than the busiest parts of Ha Long Bay, and the back roads around Tam Coc feel rural once the day trippers leave.
  • Easy to add Haiphong: the port city sits right on the route, so you can stop for street food and colonial streets without a detour.

The loop works in both directions. Travellers who arrive in Hanoi often go to Ninh Binh first and finish on the island, while those flying into Cat Bi Airport in Haiphong usually start with Cat Ba. The plan below goes from Cat Ba to Ninh Binh, but you can simply reverse it.

Quick Overview Of The 5 Day Itinerary

This is the version we recommend for most first-time visitors. It balances active days with slow mornings and keeps the transfer day comfortable.

Day Where Main plan
Day 1 Cat Ba Island Arrive, check in, sunset walk around Cat Ba town harbour
Day 2 Lan Ha Bay Full day boat trip with kayaking, swimming and a fishing village
Day 3 Cat Ba National Park Morning hike to a viewpoint, relaxed afternoon at a beach
Day 4 Transfer Ferry and road journey from Cat Ba to Ninh Binh, evening bike ride
Day 5 Ninh Binh Boat trip at Trang An or Tam Coc, Hoa Lu ancient capital, rice fields

If you only have four days, combine days 2 and 3 into one active day on Cat Ba. If you have six days, add a night in Haiphong on the transfer day or an extra slow day in Ninh Binh.

Days 1 To 3, Island Time On Cat Ba

Cat Ba is the largest island in the archipelago at the southern edge of Ha Long Bay, and the main base for exploring Lan Ha Bay. Give it at least two full days. The island rewards slow travel, and the weather on the water can change, so a spare day also protects your boat trip.

Day 1, arrive and settle in

Most travellers reach Cat Ba from Hanoi or Haiphong by a combination of bus or limousine van and a short ferry. Aim to arrive by mid afternoon, check in, then walk along the harbour in Cat Ba town as the fishing boats come back. Dinner at a simple seafood restaurant by the water is a classic first evening. Check prices before you order, as seafood is often charged by weight.

If you are still deciding how to reach the island, our guide to Haiphong to Cat Ba ferry and bus tips explains the main crossings, timings and booking tips.

Day 2, a full day on Lan Ha Bay

This is the highlight of the island part. A good Lan Ha Bay day trip usually includes cruising between limestone islets, kayaking into quiet lagoons, a swim stop at a small beach and a visit to a floating fishing village. Lunch is normally served on board.

  • Choose a small boat or a reputable cruise with life jackets for everyone.
  • Bring sun protection, a dry bag for your phone and shoes that can get wet.
  • Ask whether kayaking and entrance fees are included, so there are no surprises.

Day 3, hiking and beaches

Start early with a hike in Cat Ba National Park while it is still cool. The climb to Ngu Lam peak is short but steep, with a rewarding view over forested hills. Wear grippy shoes, carry water and avoid the trail after heavy rain, when rocks become slippery. In the afternoon, relax at one of the beaches near Cat Ba town or rent a bicycle for a gentle ride.

Day 4, The Transfer From Cat Ba To Ninh Binh

There is no direct boat or train between the two, so the connecting day always combines a short ferry crossing off the island with a road journey across the delta. Door to door, most travellers should allow around 4 to 5.5 hours with a shared bus and boat ticket, and a little less with a private car, depending on ferry waits and traffic.

Option 1, combined bus and boat ticket

One booking covers the hotel pick-up in Cat Ba town, the ferry and the onward limousine van or bus to Ninh Binh. It is the simplest and most budget-friendly choice for solo travellers and couples. The trade-off is less flexibility: you follow the operator’s schedule and may wait while other passengers are collected.

Option 2, private car with driver

A private car is the most comfortable way to connect the two, especially for families, small groups and anyone with large luggage. You choose the departure time, stop for lunch or photos and go straight to your homestay in the rice fields. Split between three or four people, the cost per person is often more reasonable than travellers expect.

Option 3, stop in Haiphong on the way

If long days in a vehicle are not your thing, break the journey in Haiphong. Take the ferry in the morning, spend the afternoon and evening in the port city, and continue to Ninh Binh the next morning. This adds a day but gives you one of the best street food evenings in northern Vietnam.

Sample Schedule For The Connecting Day

Here is how a typical transfer day looks with a morning departure. Exact times depend on your operator, the season and the ferry queue.

  1. Around 7:30 to 8:30 Breakfast and check out, then pick-up at your hotel in Cat Ba town.
  2. Mid morning Ferry crossing from Cai Vieng pier towards Phu Long, then the sea bridge towards Haiphong.
  3. Late morning Road journey across the Red River Delta on expressways where possible.
  4. Around midday Short rest stop or lunch on the way, longer if you travel by private car.
  5. Early afternoon Arrival in Ninh Binh town or at your homestay near Tam Coc.
  6. Late afternoon Easy bicycle ride along the rice field lanes as the light turns golden.

If you have a flight, train or another booked tour on the same day, leave a generous buffer. Strong wind can delay or suspend ferries, especially in the stormy season.

Day 5, Exploring Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is often called Ha Long Bay on land, and after a few days on the sea you will see why. The same kind of limestone towers rise here from rice fields and rivers instead of water.

Morning, a boat trip through caves and rice fields

Start early with a rowing boat trip at Trang An or Tam Coc. Local rowers, often using their feet, guide small metal boats along the river and through low limestone caves. Trang An is larger and passes temples on little islands, while Tam Coc follows a river through rice fields that turn green or golden depending on the season.

Midday, the ancient capital of Hoa Lu

Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam in the 10th century. Today you can visit temples dedicated to the early kings, set among limestone hills. It is a short ride from Tam Coc and pairs well with a boat trip on the same day.

Afternoon, viewpoints and village lanes

In the afternoon, climb to a viewpoint above the rice fields for a wide view of the river and peaks, or cycle along small village lanes. If you have a sixth day, slow down: visit a quieter pagoda, take a cooking class at your homestay or simply sit with a coffee and watch the farmers at work.

Shorter And Longer Versions Of The Itinerary

4 days, the fast version

  • Day 1: arrive on Cat Ba, harbour walk and seafood dinner.
  • Day 2: Lan Ha Bay boat trip with kayaking.
  • Day 3: early transfer to Ninh Binh, afternoon bike ride around Tam Coc.
  • Day 4: Trang An boat trip and Hoa Lu, then onward to Hanoi.

This works, but you lose the buffer day on the island. If the weather cancels your boat trip, there is no second chance.

6 days, the relaxed version with Haiphong

  • Days 1 to 3: Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay as above.
  • Day 4: ferry to Haiphong, afternoon in the old French quarter, evening street food walk.
  • Day 5: morning drive to Ninh Binh, afternoon bike ride.
  • Day 6: boat trip, Hoa Lu and a viewpoint before leaving.

The Haiphong stop is our favourite twist. You will taste crab noodle soup, spicy bread sticks and snails at plastic tables, and see a real Vietnamese city that most tourists skip. Our story about a Haiphong street food adventure gives you a taste of that evening.

Where To Stay On Each Side

On Cat Ba

  • Cat Ba town: the most convenient base, with restaurants, shops and easy pick-ups for boat trips and transfers.
  • Quieter bays and resorts: nicer views and calm, but you depend more on taxis and hotel transport.
  • Overnight cruise: one night on a boat in Lan Ha Bay replaces a hotel night and adds sunset and sunrise on the water.

In Ninh Binh

  • Tam Coc area: homestays and small hotels among the rice fields, ideal for cycling and sunsets.
  • Trang An area: quieter, closer to Trang An and Hoa Lu, with some larger resorts.
  • Ninh Binh town: practical for train connections but less scenic.

Book Cat Ba early for summer weekends and Vietnamese holidays, when the island fills with domestic visitors. Ninh Binh is busiest at weekends and in the rice harvest season.

Packing And Practical Tips For The Loop

  • Pack light: one main bag per person and a small day bag make ferries and van changes much easier.
  • Keep valuables with you: passports, phones and cash stay in your day bag, not in the luggage hold.
  • Motion sickness: bring tablets if anyone gets seasick or carsick, both the boat and the winding island roads can be bumpy.
  • Cash and cards: carry some Vietnamese dong for small shops, boat tips and rural cafes.
  • Dress for temples: cover shoulders and knees when visiting Hoa Lu and pagodas.
  • Book key parts ahead: your Lan Ha Bay trip and the transfer, especially at weekends and on holidays.
